PRECISE-TBM project kicks off to advance earlier diagnosis of childhood TB meningitis

Childhood tuberculous meningitis (TBM) remains one of the most difficult forms of tuberculosis to diagnose, and improving access to rapid, reliable diagnostics is essential to improving patient outcomes. With this goal in mind, the PRECISE-TBM project officially started in May 2025. On 11 June, all consortium partners came together for a first virtual kick-off meeting to align on the project's objectives and necessary next steps.

Coordinating early key activities

Project coordinator Novel Chegou from Stellenbosch University welcomed participants and provided an overview of PRECISE-TBM, including its scientific objectives and consortium structure. Each partner then introduced their organisation and role in the project, highlighting the expertise they will contribute across biomarker research, diagnostic development, clinical evaluation, and project coordination.

During the main part of the meeting, the consortium reviewed key activities planned for the coming months. Partners discussed requirements for implementing the upcoming clinical study, including recruitment targets, site readiness, and the ethics approval process across the participating countries. Another important topic was assay development and the accompanying smartphone application. Finally, the consortium also reviewed the biomarker research that will form the basis of the project's blood-based diagnostic test.     

Looking ahead

By developing rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests based on cerebrospinal fluid and blood biomarkers, PRECISE-TBM aims to improve the diagnosis of childhood tuberculous meningitis and enable earlier treatment for affected children. With the project now officially underway, all partners are ready to begin the work ahead and continue the exchange at the first in-person kick-off meeting, which will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, in November.
